Imperial College AHSC launches innovative research fellowship for Consultant-level doctors
Working with NHS partners in the Imperial AHSC partnership, the AHSC has introduced an innovative research fellowship for Consultants. The Imperial AHSC Post-Doctoral, Post-CCT Research Fellowships (APPRF) provides up to 3 years protected time to conduct research and write applications for next stage research fellowships, alongside a 50% clinical role within an AHSC linked NHS Trust.
Coordinated through the Clinical Academic Training Office (CATO), in the inaugural 2025-26 recruitment round APPRF Research Fellowships are available in the following areas:
- Cardiometabolic Medicine – with clinical work at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and research hosted in National Heart & Lung Institute
- General Adult Psychiatry – with clinical work at Central & North West London NHS Foundation Trust, research hosted in Department of Brain Sciences
- Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery – with clinical work to be agreed with Head of Department of Surgery and Cancer, hosted by Department of Surgery and Cancer
Working across the Imperial university Faculty of Medicine and NHS partners, the APPRF is a rare opportunity for Consultant level doctors aspiring to progress their research careers. The award funds high quality clinical academics who are within 1 year of completing Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or maximum of 5 years post-CCT, to work towards intermediate fellowship / clinician scientist programmes.
The application process comprises 2 stages. The first stage is approaching academic and clinical departments to gain support, the second stage involves submitting a formal application through the university jobs portal.
Submission deadlines for the 2025-26 round and further details are available on the CATO APPRF webpage.
